Dendrobium flower

The stem of Dendrobium is erect, fleshy, and thick, with a slightly flattened cylindrical shape. It can grow up to 10 to 60 centimeters in length and reach a thickness of up to 1.3 centimeters. The upper part of the stem often curves back in an arching manner, while the base narrows noticeably. The stem remains unbranched and features multiple nodes, which may occasionally swell slightly. When dried, the stem takes on a golden-yellow hue. The leaves are leathery, oblong in shape, measuring 6 to 11 centimeters in length and 1 to 3 centimeters in width. They have a blunt tip and are asymmetrically bilobed, with one side longer than the other. At the base, each leaf is enveloped by a sheath that clasps the stem.

Dendrobium Noodle Strands

Dendrobium officinale thrives in cool, moist, and well-ventilated environments, naturally growing on rocks at altitudes of up to 1,600 meters. It prefers a warm, humid climate with partial shade and sunlight, as it cannot tolerate cold temperatures. This rare medicinal plant is typically found thriving on semi-shaded, moist rocky surfaces in mountainous regions as high as 1,600 meters, where the mild, humid conditions and balanced light exposure create the ideal habitat for its growth.

Store locations

Notably, Dendrobium officinale is not suitable for growing in soil. Instead, it requires a well-aerated and moisture-retentive substrate—commonly made from pine bark, crushed wood chips, and sheep manure—as a fertilizer—to ensure healthy growth. Given its aerial root structure, the cultivation medium must strike a delicate balance: it needs to retain water effectively while also allowing ample air circulation and ventilation.

Iron-skin Dendrobium Gift Box (Powder, Fengdou)

Currently, pine bark and wood chips are widely used substrate materials that promote the healthy growth of Dendrobium officinale, while timely application of sheep manure fertilizer is also essential.
