How can Dendrobium transplantation and planting be done to improve survival rates?

Dec 10,2021

Dendrobium officinale is a relatively expensive traditional Chinese medicinal herb. One of the main reasons for its high price is the low survival rate when transplanted. Although Dendrobium is widely cultivated in regions such as Yunnan, Zhejiang, and Hunan provinces in China, ensuring an ideal soil environment before transplanting new seedlings—and diligently managing the plants after transplantation—are crucial steps to boost survival rates, enhance yields, and ultimately increase farmers' incomes.
  1. Use an appropriate propagation method for cultivation. When it comes to cultivating Dendrobium orchids, sexual reproduction typically yields much lower success rates. Instead, you can select robust, three-year-old plants, nurture them, and then propagate them through division.
  2. For Dendrobium cuttings that need to root, select healthy stems for propagation. Lightly slant the cut end of each stem and apply a fungicide to disinfect the wound before inserting it into coconut coir or sawdust at an appropriate depth. Ensure thorough watering afterward, as this will encourage downward root development.
  3. After rooting, when transplanting Dendrobium orchids, maintain soil moisture at around 80%. Since part of the plant’s water requirement is met by its aerial roots that absorb moisture from the air, it’s crucial to carefully manage the humidity levels in the growing environment. Additionally, during periods of intense sunlight, be sure to provide adequate shade to protect the plants.
  4. After planting Dendrobium, to promote root growth and development, you can use rooting powder to stimulate cell division and enhance the development of the main root. Alternatively, applying potassium, phosphorus, and calcium fertilizers at appropriate concentrations simultaneously can also effectively encourage root formation.
Dendrobium officinale absorbs nutrients from the air through its aerial roots, which helps promote root development and enhance photosynthesis. Additionally, applying foliar fertilizers at the right concentration during the plant's growth phase can stimulate stem growth and leaf development.
