What are the different types of Dendrobium?
Dec 10,2021
There are many varieties of Dendrobium, most of which are wild and thus quite rare. Below, we'll introduce several common types:
1. Golden Hairpin Dendrobium
Dendrobium nobile, also known as golden hair orchid, flat golden hair, or flat grass, is a perennial herbaceous plant. Its stems grow in clusters, with the upper part slightly flattened and gently curved upward, and it’s renowned for its ability to generate saliva and quench thirst. It is widely cultivated in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, where it thrives particularly well under artificial cultivation conditions—making it relatively easy to grow in its native habitat as well.
2. Huoshan Dendrobium
Hubei Dendrobium, commonly referred to by people, is primarily produced in Huoshan County, located in the Dabie Mountains region of Anhui Province. These plants are mostly found thriving in misty, cliffside crevices and rocky nooks—and they’re especially beneficial for individuals who frequently stay up late, engage in intense mental work, consume excessive alcohol or tobacco, or suffer from physical weakness.
3. Dendrobium officinale
Dendrobium officinale is the most suitable among all Dendrobium species and is hailed as the "Number One of the Nine Immortal Herbs." It boasts the most prominent pharmacological effects among Dendrobium varieties, earning its name from its iron-green-colored epidermis.
4. Drumstick Dendrobium
The drumstick Dendrobium grows on rocks beneath evergreen broadleaf forests or in open woodlands, at altitudes ranging from 520 to 1,620 meters, where it enjoys ample sunlight. This orchid is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations and thrives best when the daily temperature difference between day and night is kept within a narrow range of 10–15°C—otherwise, it struggles to flourish.
5. Aquatic Dendrobium
Water grass Dendrobium, also known as light-joint Dendrobium, is a relatively common variety among Dendrobium orchids. It’s easy to grow, thrives quickly, and yields abundant harvests. Typically, it can be harvested in the same year it’s planted, and it’s now cultivated in regions like Yunnan.
